Sturt Park was first gazetted as the Central Reserve in 1895 and was officially known as Sturt Park in 1944, to commemorate the centenary of the inland explorations of Captain Charles Sturt in 1844-45. Near the rotunda, stands a memorial to the heroic bandsmen on the ill-fated Steamship Titanic who continued to play as the ship went down in a valiant effort to quell the panic of the passengers. The memorial was erected because of the feeling among the Broken Hill bandsmen that a lasting monument should be erected to the ship's band. Beautiful Sturt Park has large grassed areas, a fenced adventure playground for children including gas barbecue, a covered picnic area with tables and chairs and a wonderful display of roses and flowers...

The Sculpture Symposium was created in 1993 by Lawrence Beck and 12 sculptors from countries including; Georgia, Syria, Mexico, Bathurst Island and Australia, all of whom have created sandstone masterpieces. They are situated on a hill top in the outback, 12 kilometres north of Broken Hill in the Living Desert Area. This is a great place to be at sunset. Take in the atmosphere of the surrounding country side and the hilltop's beautiful artworks! Each sculptor worked on a monolith of the finest Wilcannia sandstone, which is visible for over 100 kilometres. All work was carried out by hand and was completed in four months. The blocks, up to 14 feet high and each weighing up to eight tons, were discovered in the desert and transported approximately 250 kilometres. The Sculpture Symposium was opened on 23 May 1993 with a dedication to a great humanitarian, the late Professor Fred Hollows...
