Broken Hill - Outback Australia. Also known as 'The Silver City', Broken Hill is the largest centre in Outback New South Wales. Located 1,160 km from Sydney, Broken Hill came into existence in 1885 after Charles Rasp recognised the mineral potential of the area two years earlier. Many consider that the real Outback Australia starts here.
Although Broken Hill is not located on the Darling River, it is the perfect side-trip of the Darling River Run or visa versa. If visiting Broken Hill, a short trip (less than 1 hour) to Menindee, will enable the visitor to experience the icon Darling River, Kinchega National Park, and the amazing Menindee Lakes. The centre is also a perfect base before setting off to explore Outback Australia.

Cobar Outback NSW: Cobar is an attractive and interesting town located 711 km northwest of Sydney on the main highway to Broken Hill. This famous mining town - copper was found in the district in 1870 and the town has an Aboriginal name which means the colour of copper, is also renowned for having a great museum - arguably one of the finest in rural Australia.
Menindee Lakes NSW: The Darling River flows into the Menindee Lakes from Wilcannia and on south towards Pooncarie and Wentworth. "There was Harrison, who made his pile when Pardon won the cup...." so penned Banjo Paterson in the immortal poem 'The Man from Snowy River'. The 'Cup' actually refers to the Presidents Cup at Menindee and not the Melbourne Cup as many people have assumed. Menindee is a town steeped in legend and history for Indigenous and European culture. The area was known to the Barkindji people as 'Minandichee' and it is believed this is how the name originated.
Silverton Outback Australia: Located only 24 km from Broken Hill (which means it is 1,183 km west of Sydney) Silverton has become a popular destination for both tourists and film crews. The tourists come to experience a real ghost town and consequently there are a number of shops, art galleries, museums and pubs which have grown up to meet their needs.
Its location to the Outback (drive a few kilometres out of town to 'The Breakers' and marvel at Mundi Mundi Plains and the desert which stretches to the horizon) and its proximity to all the creature comforts of Broken Hill have ensured Silverton is popular with travellers and film crews needing to shoot desert and outback scenes.

Tilpa New South Wales: "Tis said the land out west is grand!, do not care who says it", Henry Lawson: 'The Paroo River' 1893. Located on the western banks of the Darling River, the very welcoming town of Tilpa is a must for a stopover, whether you have a few hours or a few days for camping and fishing on the river or experiencing the Darling River Run as Tilpa lies about 100km downstream from Louth.
White Cliffs NSW: Just a short drive from the magnificent Darling River (and the Darling River Run) the opal town of White Cliffs is a must see outback town located a few hours from Broken Hill and the wonderful Mutawintji National Park.
Ever wanted a great nights sleep without ANY ambient noise or light and not sure how to do it? Well, the answer is at White Cliffs. With the exception to a few essential travellers' services, most of White Cliffs is underground and it is a truly remarkable experience; even for those who may baulk at the underground experience; and an easy 1 hr drive from Wilcannia (sealed road).

Wilcannia NSW: If there is one great, and largely undisturbed, port on the mighty Darling River it is Wilcannia. Cross the bridge driving from the East Coast to Broken Hill and turn either to your right or left when you enter the town and you will be amazed at the richness of the architecture. For here are the remnants of a once-important inland port and it is is to imagine how busy thus town once was.
