Broken Hill

broken hill outback nswBroken Hill, also known as 'The Silver City', is the largest centre in Outback New South Wales. Located 1,160 km from Sydney, the city came into existence in 1885 after Charles Rasp recognised the mineral potential of the area two years earlier. Today the city sits on one of the world's largest known silver-lead-zinc lodes; a deposit which is 7 km long and over 220 metres wide. Over the years it has become the state's premier desert centre known for its outstanding Outback artists, rich indigenous culture, unique Living Desert Reserve with the amazing Sculpture Symposium, and its easy access to a rich diversity of desert landscapes.

Menindee

menindee outback nsw"There was Harrison, who made his pile when Pardon won the cup...." so penned Banjo Paterson in the immortal poem 'The Man from Snowy River'. Menindee is a town steeped in legend and history for Indigenous and European culture. The area was known to the Barkindji people as 'Minandichee' and it is believed this is how the name originated.

Silverton

travel and touring - australia - - outback nsw - central darling

silverton outback nswLocated only 24 km from Broken Hill (which means it is 1,183 km west of Sydney) Silverton has become a popular destination for both tourists and film crews.  The tourists come to experience a real ghost town and consequently there are a number of shops, art galleries, museums and pubs which have grown up to meet their needs. Its location to the Outback (drive a few kilometres out of town to 'The Breakers' and marvel at Mundi Mundi Plains and the desert which stretches to the horizon) and its proximity to all the creature comforts of Broken Hill have ensured Silverton is popular with travellers and film crews needing to shoot desert and outback scenes.

Wilcannia

wilcannia outback nswIf there is one great, and largely undisturbed, port on the mighty Darling River it is Wilcannia. Cross the bridge driving from Sydney to Broken Hill and turn either to your right or left when you enter the town and you will be amazed at the richness of the architecture. For here are the remnants of a once-important inland port and it is is to imagine how busy thus town once was.
