Howard William Steer has lived his whole life in Broken Hill, having been born there in 1947. He has been painting and winning art prizes for the past 27 years. The majority of Howard's paintings depict the people of the outback and their struggle against the harshness of the Australian environment. The struggle that early miners had in gaining a living in the Broken Hill mines and their constant union battles to gain acceptable working conditions are also a favourite theme. A predominant feature throughout Howard's work depicts his sense of humour. Howard's "gossamer winged" flying doctor, features in many works...

The Darling River Run is a trip through time and the heart of Outback NSW. Best done by four wheel drive it runs between Brewarrina in the North and Wentworth in the South, taking in Broken Hill, Lake Mungo, Kinchega and Mount Gundabooka National Parks which are just astonishing, and classic outback towns like Wilcannia, Menindee, Pooncarrie, Tilpa and Louth. The drive more or less tracks along the Darling River before it joins the Murray at Wentworth in the south. When you tour this route, you'll be re-tracing the steps of explorers Sturt, Mitchell, Dowling, Burke and Wills and the history and heritage of the run are matched by the vastness of the landscape. The historic highlights are partly man made, as in the mines of Broken Hill and White Cliffs, partly born in the Aboriginal cultural and spiritual sites and partly just the land itself. Unique places such as the 'Walls of China' geological formation at Lake Mungo in the World Heritage listed Willandra Lakes area are simply stunning. Nature lovers will find plenty of wildlife through the region and a bird watching tour of the vast Menindee Lakes system is recommended. After a big day's drive meet the locals in the country pubs for an insight into life in the Outback today...

Wentworth Historic Cemetery

Former Customs Officers Residence on Darling Street. One of only two customs houses still standing today. According to research done, the Wentworth Customs house is only one of two customs houses still standing today. The other is located in the South Australian border down river from Wentworth. The Wentworth Customs house, designed by colonial James Barnett, was built in 1884. It is now a private residence, and has been altered somewhat. During 2001, a commemorative plaque was placed on the house by the Australian Customs Authority. Historic Wentworth Cemetery on Cadell Street. Wentworth has some very old burials, dating back to the 1850's. Many of the district's pioneers are buried at the Wentworth cemetery including several well know businessmen (William Gunn & John Egge). The occupants have not always rested easily here, as the front fence and some of the graves were moved back to allow room for a road and the building of Lock 10. During floods the cemetery was impossible to get to and funerals had to be boated in. Wentworth Wharf, Wharf Street. Originally built in 1879. The wharf was originally built in 1879 using local timber and was a major landmark of the town - a hive of industry. Throughout the riverboat era Wentworth was the busiest inland port within NSW (third busiest port after Sydney & Newcastle). During one week 31 steamers were docked at the wharf. The original wharf deteriorated and was demolished in 1983. This similar replica (including the little customes office) now stands in its place...
